Hush....Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964)

The second Bette Davis selection in celebration of her birthday this month is Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte. I don't believe it's possible for me to have an absolute favorite Bette Davis movie, but this is definitely the one I've seen the most. Perhaps because it's southern gothic at it's best and practically filmed in my own backyard. Most of the film is shot on location at Houmas House Plantation, about twenty minutes south of Baton Rouge. The entire cast is outstanding, especially Agnes Moorehead as Vlema. And for a yankee broad from Boston, Bette does a damn fine South Louisiana accent. This movie's got blackmail, murder, insanity, dimemberment, and that's just in the first twenty minutes.

Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Joseph Cotton, Agnes Moorehead, Mary Astor, Bruce Dern

I have always loved this movie; Bette Davis is spectacular.

On side note -- I once saw a great promotional picture of "Cousin Miriam" sitting on a headstone that looks like it could have inspired one of the stretching portraits at Disney's Haunted Mansion (the one of the widow sitting on the headstone).

I so wish I could find it.

This was a great one. Its been a few years since Ive seen it. I love that Louisiana Plantation house. I also remember a very young Bruce Dern. These are wonderful shots!
